How Washpod™ Helps Carers
When discussions around accessibility take place, the focus is naturally on the individual living with a disability, illness, or reduced mobility. However, there is another group whose needs are equally important to consider: the carers.
Whether they are family members, friends, or professional care workers, paid and unpaid carers play a vital role in helping people remain safe, independent, and comfortable at home. Their ability to provide effective support is heavily influenced by the environment they are working in.
At Dignity Access, we provide the WashPod™ range of accessible, self contained wetrooms that can be installed quickly with minimal disruption to the home. While much of the conversation around accessibility centres on the person using the facility, the benefits often extend far beyond them.
For carers, having a safe, accessible space to assist with personal care can make a significant difference to both day to day practicalities and long term wellbeing.
The Bathroom Is Where Caring Is Hardest
Washing and bathing are among the most physically demanding aspects of providing care. They require close physical assistance, strength, coordination, and an environment that supports both the person receiving care and the person providing it.
When a bathroom is not accessible, routine tasks become significantly more difficult. Carers often find themselves working in confined spaces, assisting with transfers around standard baths, or adopting awkward positions that place strain on their bodies.
Carer injuries are common and often underreported. According to the NHS, back injuries are among the most common injuries experienced by carers. However, the impact of caring can extend beyond physical strain. The Carers UK State of Caring 2025 survey found that 42% of carers said their physical health had suffered as a result of caring, while 30% described their physical health as bad or very bad. The survey also found that 74% of carers had experienced stress or anxiety, 40% reported feeling depressed, and 35% rated their mental health as bad or very bad. An injury or health issue can affect a carer’s ability to provide support safely and effectively, and recovery can often take weeks or even months.
For many carers, the challenge is not a lack of willingness or commitment. It is the reality of trying to provide safe, dignified care in a home that was never designed for changing mobility needs.
What WashPod™ Changes for Carers
At Dignity Access, we offer eight WashPod™ models, including five internal and three external options, helping us find a solution for a wide range of homes and circumstances.
More Space to Assist Safely
WashPod™ is designed to accommodate wheelchair users while also providing sufficient room for carers to assist comfortably and safely during personal care routines.
The additional space allows carers to move more freely and adopt safer working positions, helping to reduce the physical strain often associated with washing and bathing assistance.
Emily is a carer who was struggling with a lady who had Early Onset Dementia. Not only had she begun to find managing the stairs difficult, but the downstairs toilet was simply too small to accommodate them both safely so that she could help.
“It was such a struggle to get in with Nicky to help” said Emily. “It certainly couldn’t be used to wash her properly and attend to her hygiene needs”.
Emily said the WashPod™ had made “a massive difference and helped out a lot”.
Accessible Design That Supports Daily Care
Level access entry helps remove many of the challenges associated with traditional bathrooms, making everyday care routines easier to manage.
Accessible layouts can help carers provide support safely, comfortably, and with greater confidence while maintaining dignity for the person receiving care. Even step-in shower cubicles can be fraught with difficulty and difficult and too cramped to provide useful assistance.
For smaller models, the use of bi-fold doors allow additional access from outside the wetroom when required.
Fast Installation When Time Matters
Care needs can change unexpectedly following illness, injury, or hospital discharge. Families often have to adjust quickly, and carers may be left trying to manage in an environment that no longer supports safe daily care.
Not only can most WashPods™ be installed in just a few hours or a day, the lead times are short too. There’s no need to wait on contractors which helps reduce the time carers spend working around unsuitable bathroom arrangements and supporting a safer return home.
As one family explained:
“WashPod’s plug and play format meant that we just needed to find an ordinary rental property, closer to home so that my mother in law’s carers could still come. There’s much less disruption for all of us and no alterations to make good for the landlord.”
For many families, the aim is not only to make personal care possible, but to make it manageable over time. When carers have the space, access, and facilities they need, daily routines can become safer, calmer, and more sustainable at home.
Assessing the home environment
When assessing a home environment, it is important to consider both the person receiving care and the practical demands placed on those supporting them.
A safer, more accessible bathroom can help reduce physical strain, support safer care routines, and make home based care more sustainable over time. There is less manual handling and manoeuvring which will help ensure both parties have reduced risk of slips or back injuries.
The end result is a reduction in exhaustion and anxiety.
WashPod™ is available to rent or buy, with internal and external models depending on the property and individual needs. Our team can also provide remote surveys via FaceTime where appropriate, helping healthcare professionals explore suitable solutions quickly and efficiently.
Supporting Those Who Support Others
Carers play an essential role in helping people remain independent, comfortable, and connected to their homes and communities.
At Dignity Access, we believe accessibility should benefit everyone involved in the care journey. By creating safer, more practical bathroom environments, WashPod™ helps support not only the person receiving care but also the people who provide it every day.
If you are a carer, family member, occupational therapist, case manager, or healthcare professional looking for a practical accessibility solution, our team would be happy to help.
